About the guide:
Globally, there is an urgent need to meet the increasing demand for animal products while contributing to environmentally sustainable, healthy, and equitable food systems. While development institutions around the world are making higher levels of commitment to sustainable development objectives, project teams often lack information and tools to do the same in the livestock sector. The ISL (investing in Sustainable Livestock) guide provides this support and serves as a valuable resource to support well-informed and impactful investments in the livestock sector.
Investments should be tailored to the specific conditions and objectives of various livestock systems and development projects. This involves considering various factors like the type of livestock species, economic and institutional conditions, and climate zones. Therefore, the ISL guide offers advice for six livestock contexts, along with a range of project objectives and interventions, adapted to fit the specific conditions and goals of development projects. Furthermore, the ISL website provides an overview of sustainability issues, downloadable PDFs, and links to additional resources and tools from partners for more in-depth guidance on project design, implementation, and assessment.
The ISL Guide is grounded in tested theory and evidence, organized into sustainability principles for environmental sustainability, animal health, and social equity. These principles, developed by the WB alongside contributions from various institutions and international organizations, propose a structured approach to view how investment decisions will affect the level of sustainability of livestock projects.
This guide can be utilized at various project stages, making it versatile for project designers, managers, and implementers in both the public and private sectors working on livestock-related initiatives.
